Increasingly, reading specialists are realising that to be strong readers, pupils need strong background knowledge. When teachers teach subject knowledge, they are also teaching reading.
A barrier for teachers can be their own subject knowledge. Many teachers are not confident in their science knowledge. This is why Leigh Hoath and I have gathered together a crack team of science specialists to write a handbook for primary teachers. Each double page spread has the core knowledge a teacher needs to prepare to teach any science lesson, including a reading lesson.
First and foremost, teachers need to know what they’re teaching. You cannot teach what you do not know. Unfortunately, this isn’t always the case, especially in times of teacher shortages and abbreviated teacher-training trajectories. This book is a good first step to alleviate this problem.
