What is the next step for this student?

At the end of this post, please comment on whether writing instruction in KS3 science lessons is an appropriate use of class time.

At the end of year 7, we set a writing task: “Describe the advantages and disadvantages of fossil fuels.” Writing in subjects is an important curriculum goal for us. Below is an example outcome:

Based on SATs and other data, we would expect the student above to be able to achieve at least a grade 4 in science. How important is science writing instruction for this student? Please comment below.
