Making Abstract Physics Concepts Physical

4 years ago, I was promoting making abstract quantities in physics, such as current and energy, visible using representations such as bar-models and gestures (Visible Physics – My ASE Presentation).

Now I want to make these visible representations physical, so that learners can manipulate them and get a concrete feel for them. The learning tools I’m using come from observing my colleagues teaching maths. They are called Cuisenaire rods and they are perfect for representing quantities such as current, potential difference and energy.

I’ve made 2 very short videos (~2min each) to show how they could be used:

Current Cuisenaire

Energy Cuisenaire

Please let me know if you find them useful.
